Osh, Kyrgyzstan (22 July 2010) —More than 1,100 people in the cities most affected by violence in southern Kyrgyzstan last month have started work on repairing roads, cleaning up irrigation systems, removing litter and restoring parks as part of an initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and local municipalities.
Following the crisis that displaced some 400,000 people in the region last month, UNDP has launched a cash-for-work programme in the major cities of Osh and Jalalabad aiming to bring short-term jobs to unemployed youth and women.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (July 9, 2010) – Award ceremony of the National MDG Logo Design Contest winners took place today in the UN House with participation of Mr. Neal Walker, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative. The contest was conducted within the MDG Localization in Naryn Province Project of the UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme from January 15th to March 15th 2010.
The goal of the project is to support the efforts of the government and local civil society institutions to achieve MDGs. Relevance of each logo to a specific MDG and presence of national features were among the main criteria of the contest. Designers, design studios, artists and many interested people participated in the contest. Selection Committee unanimously chose the work of Alelksey Lysogorov, a well-known designer, out of all 27 works submitted.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (24 February, 2010) – Vocational school #18 hosted professors from Akershus University College, Dr. Ronny Sannerud and Dr. Tore Melby, last week where the latter conducted a two-week educational capacity building workshop for teachers from three vocational schools in Bishkek. The workshop was on The Theory of Multiple Intelligences and Cooperative Learning and organized in the framework of the UNDP Vocational Education for Street Children Project funded by the Government Norway.

Бишкек, Кыргызстан (20 января 2010 года) – Анализ прессы, проведенный агентством «Изилдоо Плюс» по заказу Программы ПРООН «Поддержка Правительства в ответе на ВИЧ в КР», показал, что количество материалов, информирующих жителей регионов о вопросах ВИЧ и СПИДа, сократилось за последние три года с 34% до 27%. В центральной прессе, несмотря на некоторые улучшения, сохраняется тенденция использования приемов сенсационной подачи материалов, а также употребление дискриминирующих и стигматизирующих терминов, что ослабляет эффективность ответа страны на пандемию.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (December29, 2009) – UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme (PRP) together with the Asian Development Bank regional project “Rural Women Empowerment in Central Asia” conducted training on using ala-kiyiz technology for making items tailored to modern European market. The participants of the training were rural women-entrepreneurs from the UNDP PRP target villages of Uzgen and Karasuu rayon, Osh and Talas oblast, engaged in felt work. Fourteen felt craftswomen participated in the training.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (December 28, 2009) – The Youth Fall Conference took place in professional lyceum #91 on December 5, 2009 within the UNDP “Vocational Education for Street Children Project in the Kyrgyz Republic”. More than 50 students from pilot lyceums in Sokuluk rayon of Chui oblast were given an opportunity share with their experience of child participation at the conference. During the conference, the participants also obtained information on main Project outcomes. Different trainings on healthy life style issues, safe live activity as well as legal issues were arranged for children within the Project implementation period. Also they obtained leadership and presentation skills resulting in a free expression of their opinion. Kids were also able to disseminate the knowledge obtained among the students of their lyceums. Sports activities, jointly conducted with the UNDP Project, impart health life style issues to children as well as developed a team spirit.

Osh, Kyrgyzstan (December 28, 2009) – “Adilet” Self-Help Group Association established a center for women entrepreneurship of in Kok-Bel village of Nookat rayon, Osh province. The center has carpet weaving, wool carding and sewing shops as well as computer hall. UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme allocated grant funds amounting to 152,000 KGS. This project was initiated a group of women from Kok-Bel village headed by Kalys Nurueva.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (December14, 2009) – UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme has launched “Localization of the Millennium Development Goals in Naryn oblast” Project. This is the first project aimed at adapting eight development goals at oblast, rayon, aiyl okrug and village levels, that are designed to address extreme poverty reduction, achievement of universal primary education, promotion of gender equality and women empowerment, child mortality reduction, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop global partnership. These goals have its indicators on global and country levels.
