Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Dec. 16, 2008) – The two competitions entitled “ЖАШТАРМОЛОДЕЖЬ.KG” generated a wealth of visual images of issues and challenges facing the Kyrgyzstani youth today.
The competitions were announced by UNDP Kyrgyzstan on 1 October 2008 and were open for entries for two months. Two professional panels consisting of the country’s most accomplished photographers and designers have selected eight prize winners and 32 winners of incentive prizes and diplomas. An award ceremony is taking place today in the UN House in Bishkek. “These competitions have shown the ways the Kyrgyzstani youth identify and visualize the challenges that they face these days,” says the UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic Neal Walker. “These insights provide excellent input to the work that UNDP is doing in support of the development of the 2009 National Human Development Report (NHDR) on Youth.”
The poster competition winner entries are “Right to Education” by NTK Group (1st prize), “Under the Sun” by Meerim Arabekova (2nd prize), “Numbers/ Fates” by Roman Kirichenko (3rd prize), “Newlyweds KG” by Irina Tolchina (3rd prize), and “Smiles” by Evgeny Morozov (3rd prize). The photo competition winner entries are a series of photos by Anna Zima (1st prize), a series of photos by Ulan Mirzahmetov (2nd prize), and “The Deadend” by Aichurek Kojegulova (3rd prize) (see full list below)
UNDP plans to use the laureate photos and posters in its communication and advocacy efforts, including NHDR prelaunch campaign. Besides, all competition participants will have an opportunity to continue their creative efforts in future UNPD initiatives related to development communication through visual culture and arts. One of the initiatives may include poster and photo exhibitions early next year.
