Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (November 12, 2011) – During her two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan UN Assistant Secretary General and Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Kori Udovicki met with the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbayeva.
During the meeting parties exchanged views on the recent Presidential elections. Kori Udovicki highlighted the good work done to carry out the free and peaceful elections, as noted by many international and national observers. Democratic norms spelled out in the Constitution are gaining stronger grounds in the country.
President Otunbayeva noted that the Presidential elections completed the transitional period of political reforms in the country. “Despite all the difficulties, Parliamentary democracy is growing stronger and proving its sustainability. The people of Kyrgyzstan made a decisive step on the way to democracy and demonstrated their commitment to open and peaceful transition of power, to progress and civilized development” said Otunbayeva.
She also noted that the fact that Kyrgyzstan signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and follow-up on the recommendations of the UN Council on Human Rights, where Kyrgyzstan acts as the deputy chairman, serves as additional proof of the country’s democratic aspirations.
Parties also discussed other wide range of issues related to results of successful cooperation between UNDP and Kyrgyzstan, priority areas of reforms to strengthen democratic achievements and provision of sustainable development. Ms. Udovicki expressed her gratitude to the President Otunbayeva for her personal support for programmes and projects implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic by UNDP and other agencies of the UN system.
Ms. Kori Udovicki reassured that UNDP is interested in and intends to further develop cooperation with Kyrgyzstan within the next programme cycle for 2012-2016, and noted that implemented programmes and projects will fully correspond to the priorities of sustainable human development in the Kyrgyz Republic.
