Today the Russian Embassy in Bishkek hosted a meeting devoted to the results of cooperation between the Russian Federation and the UN system in the Kyrgyz Republic on assistance in 2011 in post-conflict recovery of the country. During the meeting parties also discussed further cooperation plans.
Ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Kyrgyz Republic Valentin Vlasov and other diplomats of the embassy, UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic Alexander Avanessov, head of the President’s Office Jantoro Satybaldiev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Kazakbayev and heads of organizations within the UN system in the country took part in the meeting.
At the end of October 2010 Government of the Russian Federation provided 5 million US dollars as a support to the Kyrgyz Republic recovery after the crisis and conflict. Funds were given through organizations within the UN system (WFP – $2 mln, UNDP, UNICEF and WHO – $1 million each) representatives of which work in the Kyrgyz Republic. Moreover, 3 million US dollars were provided through the International Organization of Civil Protection.
Such assistance of Russia through the UN system in Kyrgyzstan was a first experience, which was crucial and timely input to efforts undertaken by international community to support programmes and projects, directed towards those who suffered during the conflict, recovery and strengthening peace and trust in post-conflict areas. They helped to recover normal economic activities and social development in key areas like healthcare, water sanitation, education, legal assistance and food security.
After the meeting, Ambassador Valentin Vlasov, UN Resident Coordinator Alexander Avanessov, UNICEF Representative Jonathan Veitch, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Pradeep Sharma, head of WHO office Oskon Moldokulov and WFP Country Director a.i. Michael Huggins gave a press conference.
