Religious Leaders and HIV/AIDS Issues

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (November 20, 2008) - UNDP Programme “Support to the Kyrgyz Government to respond to HIV” jointly with the State Agency on Religious Affairs under the conducted seminar titled “Religious leaders and HIV/AIDS issues”.
 
During the workshop 20 religious leaders and young spiritual activists were trained on different aspects of HIV/AIDS including the issues of psychological support for people affected by the epidemic.  Based on the 5 years work experience in this area, specialists of the State Agency on Religious Affairs conducted the seminar in accordance with the unique training program adapted to major religious postulates, local traditions and based on international experience.
The workshop for religious leaders was focused on capacity development and strengthening the role of the clergy in forming a positive attitude in believers towards HIV prevention and forming a tolerant attitude towards people affected by the epidemics.  The final goal of the seminar was increasing awareness of general population (and rural particularly) in understanding the problem of HIV/AIDS, developing a responsible attitude to their own health and also creating a favorable environment for implementing HIV/AIDS programs.
