In 2010 UNDP Kyrgyzstan is set to strengthen its partnership with the national partners to accelerate Kyrgyzstan’s progress toward the Millennium Development Goals.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (January 22, 2010) – Today UNDP Kyrgyzstan is hosted a major meeting with its national partners in Jannat Hotel, Bishkek.  The meeting was attended by Representatives of the President’s Institute, key ministers, the Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament, and all UNDP national programme directors.  The event aimed to strengthen the traditionally strong partnerships between the UNDP and the Kyrgyz Government in their work together towards development results in Kyrgyzstan.

The meeting participants shared their experiences in various areas of development interventions within UNDP’s mandate.  In the past four years, UNDP Kyrgyzstan helped mobilize over USD 54 million to support national priorities in fighting poverty, promoting democratic governance, strengthening borders, protecting environment and sustainable development.

“I am deeply honored by the presence of so many the highest level officials of the different branches of power in the Kyrgyz Republic: the President’s Institute, the Parliament and the Government as well as other central bodies. It shows the real interest in the partnership between the United Nations and the Kyrgyz Republic.  With great pleasure and pride, I can state that there is truly excellent cooperation that extends back many years.  I am confident it will continue into the future. This meeting has a strategic character for us: we look forward today to the real opportunity to exchange views on how to work together in 2010 and beyond,” said the UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan Neal Walker in his welcoming speech.

Kyrgyzstan representatives underscored the need to strengthen the partnership for development results to accelerate the country’s achievement of MDG commitments reconfirmed by Kyrgyzstan’s leadership.

UNDP’s “impartiality, neutrality and professionalism make it a strong asset for the country.  And we need to raise the level of UNDP-Government collaboration to achieve even greater results,” concluded his remarks the Kyrgyz Parliament’s Speaker Zainidin Kurmanov.

“We would like to prepare Kyrgyzstan for participation in the MDG Summit in September 2010 in a way that our country could show good results in the progress towards its MDG commitments,” noted the First Vice Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov.

UNDP’s firm commitment to the principles of national ownership and equal partnership is reflected in the design and implementation of all its programmes that respond to the national priorities, yet flexible enough to react to emerging needs.

UNDP is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.
