UNDP and the International Science and Technology Center Discuss Issues of Uranium Tailings in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (September 2, 2011) – UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan Alexander Avanessov met with the Executive Director of the International Science and Technology Center Mr. Adriaan van der Meer and regional director of the ISTC in Kyrgyzstan Vitaly Kovalenko.

Parties discussed issues of cooperation in implementing projects and programmes aimed at solving problems related to uranium and other toxic waste tailings, reducing risks for sustainable human development and protection of the environment in Kyrgyzstan and the region.

Parties also highlighted the importance of well coordinated actions between state structures, international organizations, donor community. It is important that implemented projects not only use modern technologies of recultivation of tailings, but also implement information campgaigns, healthcare programmes, socio-economic restoration of depressed former uranium production areas.

UNDP and ISTC defined further actions upon results of discussion.
