Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic (25 May 2009) – The main purpose of the event is to tell about new UNDP Disaster Risk Management Programme, which is aimed at provision of assistance to the Kyrgyz Government in order to establish sustainable capacity for disaster risk reduction.
Establishment of the new programme is stipulated by necessity of coordination of actions for international and non-governmental organizations to render the humanitarian assistance to people, suffered from disasters and to create a disaster prevention and post-disaster recovery mechanism at the level of local self-governments. The urgency of the issue is related to the growing number of emergency situations and their victims with growth in Kyrgyzstan, as well as all over the world.
Two projects are currently implemented within Disaster Risk Management Programme. The project “Enhancing Coordination for Disaster Response in the Kyrgyz Republic” is aimed at coordination of international and non-governmental organizations for rendering of humanitarian assistance to people, suffered from emergency situations. The second project “Mainstreaming DRM into decentralization process in KR” aimed at establishing of disaster prevention and post-disaster recovery mechanisms at the level of local self-governments, using possibilities provided during the government decentralization process.
Participants of the presentation included members of Parliament, officials from the Emergency Situations Ministry and National Agency for Local Self Governments, UNDP Resident Representative, EU Representative, UNICEF, IOM, International Federation of Red Cross, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and OCHA.
The presentation covered information about achieved outputs by the two projects followed by a discussion of further activities and plans between participants.
The presentation was initiated by UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic with assistance of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kirghiz Republic.
Priorities in disaster risk reductions sector were discussed and also further collaboration between government agencies of the Kyrgyz Republic and international organizations during the dialogue.
