Friendship House is Opening in Uzgen
Uzgen, Kyrgyzstan (November 18, 2011) – On November 19th an official opening ceremony of the Friendship House will take place in Uzgen.  The project is aimed at strengthening cultural and language interaction, increase trust, engage in cultural dialogue and decrease the level of conflict attitude among various ethnic groups in Uzgen district of Osh province.  The project was initiated by the Council of Ethnic Development of Uzgen district and supported by the UNDP Peace and Development Programme.


The event will start with the solemn cutting of a red ribbon symbolizing the launch of the project preceeded by  traditional congratulatory speeches and parting words.  The opening ceremony will be accompanied by a Friendship Festival, an event featuring, comic performances, songs and dances which not only leave positive impressions, but also bond people.  Besides, performers will get prizes, and the winner will be awarded the Friendship Festival grand prize.

According to the Council of Ethnic Development, the state financing available for schools, higher educational institution is not sufficient to carry out additional educational activities on behavior in multicultural environment and tolerance, lack of which negatively affects relations between young people in a polytechnic society.


To prevent conflicts related to interethnic issues local authorities, law enforcement bodies, religious leaders and leaders of communities of Uzgen district under the aegis of the Council of Ethnic Development of Uzgen district initiated establishment of the Friendship House.

Progress and development of the region, country and the society at large depends on the interethnic consent, mutual understanding and civil peace as a whole.  The cooperative efforts of the authorities and civil sector are directed to achieving of mutual understanding between people, consolidation of communities and maintenance of the ethnic variety.

It is also planned to conduct a series of trainings on prevention of conflicts, management of ethnic variety and tolerance, cultural events aimed at increasing trust and strengthening of cultural and language interaction between various ethnic groups (festivals, creative evenings, intellectual games, etc.).
