UNDP News Digest: Socio-Economic Development (December 5, 2011 - February 6, 2012)

December 19 – Laboratory of the Central City Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance (CCSES) in Bishkek has begun working again after major renovation works, which were funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) in the Kyrgyz Republic. In 2011, UNDP has funded improvements of 19 Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance laboratories for total amount of $217, 295 under the project of GFATM. December 21 – Rahmanberdiev сompany officially launched its mayonnaise and ketchup production line. The company was founded by Zhany Turmush Umut Public Association and funded by the Russian Government. Representatives of local administration, private, public and international organizations participated in the launch event. The company employs 16 workers, including 7 workers with disabilities with consideration of their labor and social adaptation conditions. December 27 – "Country PLHIV network" and "Unity of PLHIV" organized a New Year’s party for 34 HIV-positive children and children with HIV-positive parents in the city AIDS Centre in Bishkek. Children living with HIV and children of HIV-infected mothers received New Year’s gifts – toys and sweets, which were chosen based on individual preferences. The even was organized by Grants Implementation Unit of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Kyrgyzstan (GMU GFATM) as part of a campaign for the World AIDS Day. December 31 – Restoration of several public facilities including schools, kindergartens, medical and obstetrical stations, rehabilitation center for people with disabilities etc. was completed. 175 people from vulnerable groups (119 men and 56 women) including 164 graduates of vocational schools were involved in these public works. Restoration of the infrastructure was supported within the “Youth, Livelihoods, and Peace promotion” project funded by the Peacebuilding Fund. January 11-14A group of doctors from Slovakia headed by Professor Vladimir Krchmeri visited Kyrgyzstan. They visited  “AIDS” centers in Osh and Jalal-Abad provinces and examined 165 HIV-positive children. According to Professor Krchmeri, children receive high level treatment, which underlines the high level of professionalism of medical staff. Moreover, he reported that ARVs supplied by UNDP in Kyrgyzstan in the framework of the GFATM grant comply with the World Health Organization requirements. January 20 – In Osh members of Sheitter birimdick public union opened a beauty saloon Jasmin, while members of a public union of families who lost relatives in Osh events opened a mini-market Zalkar and Internet café Nur, which employs graduates of vocational schools. These small businesses employ 11 people and were supported by the “Support to rehabilitation and development of local business-environment of Osh and Jalal-Abad cities affected by the interethnic conflict” project, funded by the Russian Government. The project also provided these entrepreneurs affected by the June events with equipment and materials for their income generating activities. January 1-31 – UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme implements a project on creation of alternative employment in Khaidarkan village funded by UNDP and UNEP. The project helped to develop 15 business projects to create employment opportunities for local population for a total sum of 5.6 million kyrgyz soms. It is expected that this will help open 17 small businesses: a vegetables store, a pastry shop, an automobile service center, a medical and diagnostic center and others that will employ around 80 residents of Khaidarkan. January 29 – A meeting of civil society representatives and the Grant Implementation Unit of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) took place in the UN House. The main goal of the meeting was to reach consensus and strengthen cooperation in activities within the AIDS component grant. The meeting was chaired by the UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative Alexander Avanessov. More than 50 people took part in the meeting, representing almost all provinces of the Kyrgyz Republic except for Talas and Batken provinces.
