Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (August 6, 2010) – MDG should serve as a basis for elaboration of development programmes by the new Government – such wish was expressed by UNDP National Expert Rafkat Khasanov at the training for journalists on Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Study seminar organized by UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme (PRP) within a project on localization of MDGs in Naryn province. It is aimed at increasing capacity of mass media representatives on MDG.
“Despite the fact that Kyrgyzstan signed Declaration on achieving MDGs in September 2000 as a UN member-state, country leadership did not pay appropriate attention to implementing MDG objectives. That is why expert community has high hopes in journalists in the task of achieving MDGs. You – main information carriers and only you can reach general public, civil sector and state structures on existing issues in the area of poverty reduction, access to education, decreasing child and maternal mortality, gender equality, issues on fighting with malaria and HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability and global partnership. Role of journalists is to raise these problems at the level of discussion and promotion” noted Rafkat Khasanov.
Representatives of both national level and Naryn province mass media, where in pilot villages of Min-Bulak, Uchkun, Kulanak and Kazybek UNDP Poverty Reduction Programme is implementing the project on localization of MDGs, participated in the training.
Mirlan Kadyrov from Almaz-Naryn radio station: “It’s my first time at such training and now I have lots of ideas for preparing informational material on MDGs. In particular, I am planning to prepare a series of broadcasts on poverty reduction, write on reasons of poverty in villages, as well as on successful practices of this project”.
Erkingul Bokoeva from Naryn.kg Media Center: “I really liked format of the live discussion of this training. We have received an opportunity to discuss and receive interesting information from well known UNDP experts Rafkat Khasanov, Kemal Izmailov and Mira Karybaeva. I am specifically interested in the problem of child and maternal mortality, which to the great extent depends on how women themselves treat their own health and health of children”.
Galina Luneva from Slovo Kyrgyzstana: “Millenium Development Goals will become basis for my articles. I think that UNDP project on MDG localization in Naryn Oblast is very important first of all for the population of this region, especially for local self governance bodies, who receive an excellent opportunity to attract and implement investment projects in each village, obtain strategic planning skills and in this way make own input into MDG achievement. Support provided by UNDP project will increase public awareness and liability of local governments for further development of own villages”.
