Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (December 14, 2009) – UNDP Environment Program and GEF/UNDP Projects “Strengthening Policy and Regulatory Framework for Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Fishery Sector”, “Capacity Building for Improved National Financing of Global Environmental Management in Kyrgyzstan”, “Demonstrating Sustainable Mountain Pasture Management in the Suusamyr Valley”, “Capacity Building for Implementation of Sustainable Waste Management principles in the Kyrgyz Republic” “Assessment of Radioactive Waste Management Capabilities in the Kyrgyz Republic in Transboundary Context” presented the results of their activities for the last year at the Board Meeting of the Kyrgyz Republic State Agency on Environment Protection and Forestry.
Members of the Kyrgyz Parliament (Jogorku Kenesh), representatives of state forestries and territorial environment departments, as well as managers and experts of the Environment Program and Projects took part in the work of the meeting.
Zharas Takenov, UNDP International Senior Programme Adviser briefed members of the Board on key achievements and developments of the Environment Programme and GEF/UNDP Projects for 2009. He noted that annual presentations at Board Meeting usually supplement the traditional annual reports which are discussed at the Steering Committees of each project.
During the discussion a special interest focused on achieved results and their impact on the state of environment in such project activities as pasture management, fish fauna and renewable energy sources. Members of Parliament particularly noted a large scope of implemented activity and called for improved coordination between state bodies and UNDP projects, as well as for better environment regulatory framework and the need for raising awareness of project activities through mass media. The discussion resulted in a decision to hold the work meeting of GEF projects in early 2010 to address the above mentioned issues.
