Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (November 2009) – Opening ceremony of a laboratory was held in professional lyceum #18 in Bishkek.  The lab will host practical training for students trained in majoring hotel services.  It was established with the financial support of UNDP Vocational Education for Street Children Project in the Kyrgyz Republic Project.

This new laboratory is equipped with the modern facility, on which students have a chance to put the skills obtained into practice.  Aijamal Orozbekova came to study in the lyceum from Min-Bulak village of  Talas oblast.  After completing 9th grade, she decided to enter the PL #18 following her friends’ advice.  Now she is grateful to her friends.  The advantage of studying in the lyceum is that after completing the three-year training, she will be able to obtain five majors: cook, barman, hotel clerk, housemaid and waitress.

“I suppose that this major will enable me to find a job easily.  The cooks are in demand in all the cafes and restaurants of Bishkek and they earn good money”- says Aijamal.

“The alumni of professional lyceums are the most demanded in the labor market”, - says director of the PL #18, Azamat Imankulov.  “At present, we receive proposals from employers, and these are well-known hotels and restaurants of Bishkek that ask us to train professional personnel with the knowledge of English language.  And, since it is quite possible, we try to meet the needs of private sector, - sums up Azamat Imankulov.

It should be noted that professional lyceum #18 in Bishkek is the pilot lyceum of the UNDP Vocational Education for Street Children Project in the Kyrgyz Republic Project that is financed by Norwegian Government.

Within the project implementation period, the lyceum has received methodological and financial aid.  Moreover, the teachers had an opportunity to adopt Norwegian colleagues’ experience during their visit to Norway that improved their teaching methods and developed their professional capacity.
